Integrity Matters

He graduated cum laude in 1949 with an Associate of Arts degree at the Ateneo de Manila University. Afterward, he attended the University of the Philippines College of Law and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Laws degree. He achieved the 11th highest score in the 1953 bar examinations with a 91.72% rating and a perfect score in mercantile law. As a scholar at the Harvard Law School, he earned a Master of Laws degree with specialized training in international tax law. These are just  few evidences of how brilliant he is. The man I am talking about is no other than the Senate President- Senator Juan Ponce Enrile. One of the big names in the Philippines.

Personally, I really adored this man because of the courage he had shown in pulling out from the position of the Chief Justice Renato Corona for some controversial issues. And when I watched his life story in “Maalaala Mo Kaya” (MMK), it made me think that he really is a good man. I salute this man. I really like him. But my world was falling apart when I heard that he is one of the senators who are involved in the pork barrel scam. He is being accused of misusing his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF).   In a speech during the opening ceremonies of the 2013 National Accountancy Week, Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago said Enrile received the biggest amount of P118 million from Senate funds for alleged office expenses based on documents she supposedly sourced from the Commission on Audit. But he strongly denied the issue.

What’s the truth behind all of these accusations and denials? I assume I am not the only person who believed in the innocence of Sen. Enrile but what if he really did something wrong? I don’t even know what to think. Sen. Enrile gave a good name to his name but in a twinkling of an eye, it’s gone. I am not judging him, but he has to realize that his integrity as an official and as a person matters. It doesn’t matter how rich and famous he is, if he is not leaving a good legacy in his field of service. Please Sen. Enrile justify yourself and prove your innocence. As you have stated “I’m not up to betray any of my people. I’ve never been known for that.” Inspire me again!
